LTE to WCDMA mid-call
Qualcomm voice over LTE test hints at a complete 4G future. Phones, Qualcomm, LTE, 4G 0

Now, stick with us, because this might sound like the most technical opening to a news story in the history of Pocket-lint but it is a pretty big deal in the evolution of mobile phones: Qualcomm, working alongside Ericsson, has successfully completed the first voice call handover from an LTE mobile network to a WCDMA network using Single Radio Voice Call Continuity (SRVCC).

We told you it sounded complex.

It really isn’t though and simply hints that we’re heading to a complete LTE (or 4G, if you prefer) future for mobile.

The successful test means that networks using a single chip – Qualcomm’s Snapdragon S4 MSM8960 – are able to switch a user’s call seamlessly to a WCDMA network when using VoLTE (voice over LTE, an internet-powered voice call) if it leaves the LTE network’s coverage area. And there’s no need for smartphones to use separate LTE and 3G radios and modems.

“As LTE networks are deployed alongside 3G networks, the ability for multimode 3G/LTE mobile devices to connect to different network technologies will be an important part of providing the best possible mobile voice and data experience to consumers,” said Cristiano Amon, senior vice-president of product management, Qualcomm.

“Qualcomm is committed to the successful deployment of LTE networks worldwide in conjunction with 3G networks, and the milestone we’ve achieved with Ericsson is another step towards making VoLTE technology a commercial reality.”

This might still read as overly technical but it is a massive step towards a complete 4G solution for users. By the time the UK finally sees some LTE love (possibly this year, probably next) we should be well on our way….

Padawan’s play
The Star Wars toys that let you play the movies. Toys, Star Wars, Features 0

The Star Wars films are back in the cinema once again, this time in glorious 3D, and what better way to enjoy and celebrate the fact than by embracing the merchandising machine and buying a stack of toys to let you enjoy the film beyond the cinema screen?

As you might expect toy companies are falling over themselves to embrace the Force. So, here are the best Star Wars toys to look forward to this year:

Scalextric Star Wars Death Star Attack and Scalextric Start Star Wars Battle of Endor

The two biggest toy brands of your childhood; Star Wars and Scalextric are joining forces in 2012 bring us the Micro Scalextric Star Wars Death Star Attack set that will cost ?69.99 and the Scalextric Start Star Wars Battle of Endor which costs ?99.99.

The first sees you and a mate trying to knock each other off the track in a split time trial race X-Wing versus Tie-Fighter, while the second features a bigger 1/32 scale track system racing as Luke Skywalker and the other as an Imperial Scout on the Speed Racers from Return of the Jedi.

RC Jumbo Inflatable R2-D2

The RC Jumbo Inflatable R2-D2 stands 26-inches (65cm) tall and is controlled in much the same way as a normal remote controlled car giving you an almost life-size, life-like R2-D2 for your home.

Coming out in Q3/Q4 this year (autumn/winter time), the RC Jumbo Inflatable R2-D2 is expected to retail for around ?40 and should give you plenty of fun around your house. Blaze, the makers of the remote control droid, also say that other characters will be coming too. Sadly Princess Leia doesn’t come in the box for dads.

R2-D2 phone safe

When we were kids our secret storage was an old shoe box that we had coloured in with some felt tip pens, but that’s old hat, today’s kids want something a little more high-tech.

In steps the R2-D2 safe that is unlocked by your iPhone, iPod touch or Android smartphone. Rather than using the latest?cutting?edge?technology like Bluetooth, Wireless or NFC, the app works by sending a receiver a series of lights as if it was Morse code once you’ve docked the phone.

That also means that you can work it with Android handsets as the company behind the new gadget told Pocket-lint that there is an Android app coming as well. The lack of expensive technology means that the safe will cost just ?19.99 when it comes out in the UK in June.

It isn’t as big as a shoebox, but it should be big enough to store some of your favourite (small) trinkets.

Darth Vader bedside lamp

We’ve already seen Lego Yoda and Stormtrooper lamps, but have you seen the Darth Vader one with glowing lightsaber? Thought not.

Due out later this year the Dark Sith will be happy to take a break from doing no good to lighting your kids bedroom come bedtime.

There are two versions available – one with the lights shining out of his feet, the other from the lightsaber. Both should be on sale in the coming months.

Yoda Air Hedz by Bluw

Air Hedz are the heads of your favourite Star Wars characters in giant size filled with air that you can then wear on your head. If that sounds simple and stupid enough that’s because that’s exactly what it is (as you can see by the picture).

Costing ?11.99 all you’ve got to do is slip them on your bonse and you’re ready to look like a dork. Just don’t expect to be able to easily walk through doors.?Those not impressed by Yoda will be glad to hear you can get?Stormtrooper hedz?as well.

Han Solo in Carbonite Silicone Tray

For Star Wars fans who feel that their lives aren’t quite complete, this could well be the answer. Not only can you recreate the scene from The Empire Strikes Back where everyone’s favourite intergalactic smuggler is placed in suspended animation for?delivery to Jabba the Hutt, but you can also produce some spectacular ice cubes for keeping yourself tipple cool and impressing your sci-fi savvy mates at the same time.

The tray comprises one large “Han”, which is very roughly the same size as an old-school Star Wars figure, along with six?miniature?versions and costs ?6.49.?We recommend you try it with chocolate rather than ice though for better results.

Operation Star Wars R2-D2 Edition

Hasbro is releasing an R2-D2 version of the popular?game?Operation that sees you having to use your steady hand to get out bits of droid rather than the odd funny bone.

“The Rebel Alliance’s favourite astromech droid has developed all sorts of mechanical maladies, and it’s up to your skillful surgical hands to get the little guy feeling right again,” reads the official statement.?The new game costs around ?20.

Multi Troop Transport Droid Carrier?

If you really want to go full out on the action toy front though you’ll want the?Multi Troop Transport Droid Carrier from Hasbro. In keeping with the dozens of other character action toys you can get, this is one mega set.?

For those that need a quick refresher, it is the Droid carrier from The Phantom Menace that is used in the attack on Naboo. For ?150 you’ll get the Star Wars Class III MTT Vehicle and 20 Droids to attack rebel scum with. Three AAA batteries ensure that it makes plenty of noise. It will be coming in Autumn.

Star Wars Darth Maul Double Bladed Lightsaber

We’ve seen plenty of Lightsabers in our time here at Pocket-lint, but this new offering from Hasbro is the one that Darth Maul uses in the Phantom?Menace?and can be split in two for full fighting effect allowing you to either fight with two lightsabers or just the one double bladed option. Unlike the one that is currently on the market, this version lights up giving you that extra realistic effect. Scary.?

Lego Star Wars Planets

The LEGO Star Wars Planets, priced at ?9.99, are a series of planets from the Star Wars Universe that includes a model, display stand and name plaque all in a planet. There are three to collect with a further three designs coming in Autumn 2012.?

Nicely each one has the ability to be hung up making them perfect for the Christmas tree later this year.?

Lego X-wing Starfighter and TIE Fighter

Costing ?99.98 for the pair, the two sets will allow you to recreate the famous sequence at the end of Star Wars after you’ve built the spaceships of course.

The 9493 X-wing Starfighter features wings that fold into attack position, proton torpedoes, retractable landing gear and opening cockpit and comes with Luke Skywalker, Jek Porkins, R2-D2 and R5-D8 minifigures.

The?9492 TIE Fighter is equipped with dual flick missiles and opening cockpit alongside a TIE fighter pilot, Imperial officer, Death Star trooper and R5-J2 droid minifigures.?

Star Wars Fighter Pods

Think the Lego minifigs that you can buy blind in a bag for a couple of quid and you’ll get the idea. Here, instead of a Lego character to build, you get a plastic character from the six Star Wars movies that lives in a clear plastic Death Star like pod. There are over 100 Star Wars Fighter Pods to collect suggesting you could be here for some time.?

Those that don’t like to take a gamble can, of course, cut corners by buying one of the many sets Hasbro is selling where you can see what you are going to get.?Star Wars fans will be able to buy a 4-pack, 8-pack, 12-pack and even a mega 16-pack to?guarantee?a complete set.

And 500MB picture space
Dropbox for Android beta lands with auto camera uploads. Apps, Android, Dropbox, Cloud computing 0

Dropbox has taken off the covers of an all-new version of its cloud-based solution for Android devices: the Experimental Android Forum Build 2.0.9. Catchy name huh?

The beta release brings with it a number of key new features, most notably the addition of a Camera Upload function. This allows you to have your smartphone or tablet’s photos or videos beamed directly into the cloud without your having to mess around with an upload manager.

What’s more, you’ll get 500MB of free Dropbox storage once your first picture hits the cloud. Files are limited to 180MB so you won’t be able to fire up your home-made HD movies if they are too long. But, if they’re nice and quick and get to the climax sooner rather than later, you should be okay.

During the testing period you’ll also get 500MB of free space for every 500MB of photos and videos automatically uploaded, with up to 5GB up from grabs.

The new build also includes several improvements and bug fixes, and still has all your favourite features such as file starring and bulk uploading.

Being a beta release, it’s not yet in the Android Market but you can download it directly from Dropbox.

Exposure, contrast, light, kit and point of view
Five tips for photographing snow

The snow has caused havoc, but now the sun has come out. Quick, grab your camera and get shooting. The snow makes for some great photo opportunities, but also some tricky shooting experiences.

Here are five tips to help you take some great pictures whether you’re just capturing the moment or trying to grab that perfect picture for your Christmas cards.

Exposure
Chances are your camera is going to get confused by the snow no end – you can use “snow” settings if your camera has one, else just notch up the exposure of the camera to compensate. +1 should do it. The result will be that you are overexposing the scene by one stop, admitting twice as much light into the photo and stopping everything from looking grey.

Contrast
Shooting a snow storm doesn’t look that pretty because there is no contrasting colours – everything looks grey or white. Wait till the sky clears and now you’ve got a crystal blue sky to shoot against. If the sun is refusing to come out make sure your subjects are brightly dressed. Scarves are a great way of adding a dash of bright red or green into the picture.

Point of View
This goes for all pictures you take but think about getting down to the level of your subject. Shooting a snowman by lying on the floor will give you a sense that he is far bigger than he is. Likewise when it comes to shooting a snowball fight if you’re photographing kids – get low. If you’re feeling brave get them to throw snowballs at you just as you take the picture.

Light
All that reflective snow around means there will be plenty of light. Make sure you don’t shoot into the sun. Keep the sun at right angles to your shot during morning and evening hours and at an acute angle from behind you when it’s high in the sky for improved scene exposure. The best shots will also mostly be snapped either late in the day or first thing. The great thing about shooting early is that you’ll get plenty of untouched natural shots if you’ve had a fresh bout of snow overnight.

Kit
If you’re venturing out into the woods or city it sounds silly but wrap up warm. Take a blanket (for lying on) and make sure you’ve got a full charge in your battery. Batteries don’t last as long when they are cold so you’re likely to not get as many shoots out as you can on a baking hot, sunny day. The great thing about snow is that you can always build a tripod so at least that’s one less thing to pack.

Next-gen prototype leaks
iPad 3 data hints at quad-core A6 chip and 4G fun. Tablets, Apple, iPad 3, 4G, LTE 0

It’s been a while since we’ve had any new info thrown at the iPad 3 rumour pile but a report on Boy Genius Report has chucked a couple of new suggestions into the mix; quad-core processing and LTE connectivity.

Okay, so these are features that we’ve heard speculation of before but this time they come from a source who claims to be in possession of an actual iPad 3 prototype. Imagine that – an actual iPad 3. It’s the stuff of dreams. And the source has provided a few images to back up his claims as well.

Not of the tablet, you understand (that would be far too easy) but of some screenshots from a debug tool called iBoot.

A debug tool that seems to name two new iPad devices: model numbers J1 and J2, or iPad3,1 and iPad3,2 – as we’ve heard whispered before. One is said to be a Wi-Fi model and one is said to be packing GSM/CDMA/LTE options for all carriers.

A processor with the model number S5L8945X is also mentioned. The Apple A4 chip is called the S5L8930X and the A5 is the S5L8940X. So if you add S5L8930X and S5L8940X together, divide by the S5L8945X and carry the 3 you get quad-core. Apparently. That’s the suggestion anyway – that the new tab will come rocking a brand spanking new A6 quad-core CPU.

The claim that the new device will be “the fastest iOS device ever” seems a bit unnecessary though. We weren’t expecting Apple to announce something that chugs along in comparison to the iPad 2 or the iPhone 4S.

Still, all the other stuff is ruddy exciting isn’t it? Isn’t it?

With DA 40mm f/2.8 XS lens details
Pentax K-01 compact system camera pictures leaked

There have been rumours that Pentax is about to join the compact system camera race floating around for a few weeks now, but we’ve now seen evidence for ourselves that this is true. Pictures of the new mirrorless snapper, the Pentax K-01, have appeared online – on a Chinese Pentax forum – alongside a new K-mount lens, the?Pentax DA 40mm f/2.8 XS.

It still remains that little is known about the K-01′s specifications, although earlier rumours suggested that it would feature the same 16-megapixel sensor as the K-5. And that it would sport the same 3-inch, 920k-dot LCD display on the rear.

Previous claims also state that its dimensions will be?121 x 79 x 59mm and will weigh 560g with the battery, while the shutter speed will be up to 1/4000 and it’ll be able to record Full HD video.

Now, it seems, we have pictures to go along with the specification?murmurings. So it shouldn’t be too long before the final product is revealed to us. Watch this space.

The forum at Xitex.com also leaked a number of details about the DA 40mm f/2.8 XS lens. It’s focal length is, obviously, 40mm (Equivalent to 61mm in 35mm format) and the aperture is f/2.8 – 22.

“World’s first bamboo mobile smartphone”
Bamboo phone

A British university student has designed a phone that stands out from the usual array of black, grey or white plastic numbers – by building it out of bamboo.

The Bamboo phone is called ADzero and was designed by 23 year-old Middlesex University student Kieron-Scott Woodhouse

There’s no hardware of software details for the ADzero other than it’s “Android powered” and is “approximately half the weight of an Apple iPhone, while boasting a larger screen” – all the emphasis seems to be on the design itself. Quite rightly so though, it’s a gorgeous looking piece of kit complete with a unibody design crafted from a single piece of four year-old organic bamboo.

“The whole experience so far has been incredible and completely unexpected,” said Kieron-Scott. “Completing my final year and working has been challenging, but my course and the project complement each other well and it’s a great start of my career. I can’t wait to see my mobile phone in shops this year.”

The Bamboo ADzero was originally set for China only but will now hit boutique stores in the UK as well. No release details as of yet – we’ll keep you posted.

Stylish zoomy compacts
Nikon Coolpix S6300, S9200, S9300 pictures and hands-on . Cameras, Compact cameras, Nikon, Nikon Coolpix S6300, Nikon Coolpix S9200, Nikon Coolpix S9300, Photos 0

At the top end of Nikon’s Style range of compact cameras you find the newly announced Nikon Coolpix S6300, Coolpix S9200 and S9300. They offer a wider range of features, controls and larger lenses than cameras at the bottom end of the range.

We managed to get our hands on all the new models at the UK launch, so here we’ll talk you through what you get at the top end of Nikon’s S range. We’ve bundled all the photos together in the gallery at the bottom – check the captions so you know which model you’re looking at.

Nikon Coolpix S6300 hands-on

The Nikon Coolpix S6300 is the brother camera of the S6200 launched last year. It is bulkier than those models lower down the range, so it nestles into the hand better, although there isn’t a huge amount to grip on to.

Nikon Coolpix S6300

The S6300 measures 93.6 x 57.7 x 26mm and weighs 160g and like all the new Nikon cameras it feels solidly built.?

The controls are logically and typically placed, reflecting the layout on almost all other Nikon Coolpix cameras. The S6300 is primarily designed as a point and shoot, so there isn’t much in the way of control on offer.?

The biggest difference is the step-up in lens range. It gives you a 10x zoom in that fairly compact body, giving you 25-250mm (in 35mm terms). We found the lens zoomed smoothly and quickly.

On the back you have a 2.7-inch display, although at 230k-dots it isn’t the highest resolution, so it feels a little small. What you do get, however, is that lens range at a price of ?179.99, which isn’t bad.

The Nikon Coolpix S6300 will be available in black, red and blue, from 16 February 2012.?

Nikon Coolpix S9200 and Coolpix S9300 hands-on

The Nikon Coolpix S9200 and Coolpix S9300 are essentially the same camera, the difference being that the latter model features built-in GPS to tag your photo locations on the move. Otherwise the specifications are identical.?

Nikon Coolpix S9200

As the top guns of the S range, they have the largest body and there’s even a little rubber thumb patch for a more secure grip, along with a bar at the front for your fingers. The S9300 measures 108.7 x 62.3 x 30.6mm and weighs 215g; the S9200 is fractionally smaller and lighter once you’ve sliced the GPS bump off.

We like the contouring of the body around the base of the lens. Of course the lens is one of the stars here, packing in an impressive 18x optical zoom, with a 25-450mm range (in 35mm terms). That means you can easily get in on the action on your travels.?

A 16-megapixel sensor sits at the heart of these cameras, which also offers Full HD 1080p video capture. A top-mounted mode dial gives you instant access to some shooting features, but it doesn’t go as far as offering you manual controls, for which you’d have to look to the Coolpix P310.

Nikon Coolpix S930

Around the back you have a nice detailed 921k-dot display and more controls, so if you’re looking for a little more out of your camera, but without getting too complicated, then this might be of interest.?

Like the other S range cameras from Nikon, it feels well constructed. Available from the middle of March, you can get the Nikon Coolpix S9300 in black, red, blue and silver for ?299.99. We don’t have a price for the S9200, but it will be slightly less.?

Fourth colour for WP7 handset
White Nokia Lumia 800 now official, coming to the UK. Phones, Nokia Lumia 800, Nokia 0

White stuff is flying in from all angles and we’re not talking about the snow. No, it’s a tech based blanco blizzard. After Samsung announced the official availability of the white Samsung Galaxy Nexus, the white Nokia Lumia 800 has also been unleashed.

“The story of the Nokia Lumia is one of reduction and purity,” says Nokia’s colour and material designer Tiina Aarrasshe. “White is the ultimate colour of reduction. It’s also perfect for emphasising the black polished screen. If you stand a white Lumia 800 on a table the body almost disappears, and the black screen seems to lift up and float.”

Indeed it does, although we think the images may have had more Photoshop action than a Madonna GQ cover.

Like the cyan, pink and black Lumia 800s that are already available, the phone packs a a 3.7-inch, WVGA 800×480 AMOLED display, an 8-megapixel camera boasting Carl Zeiss optics and a f2.2 aperture lens.

It’s powered by a 1.4GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 Snapdragon processor with 512MB of RAM and it has 16GB of storage (and 25GB of SkyDrive storage). The white finish is a result of its smoothly crafted polycarbonate unibody.

To celebrate the launch of the white Lumia 800, there’s a new White selection on Nokia’s music service, Mix Radio, featuring music from the likes of White Stripes and Barry White.

Available to pre-order from Phones 4u now, the Nokia Lumia 800 in white will be available on contracts starting from ?20.50 a month. It will ship in March.

Coolest Lumia 800 yet? Almost, but it’s not quite as awesome as the limited edition Batman handset that we got hands on with recently.

Fujifilm X-S1 now available in the UK. Cameras, Compact cameras, Fujifilm, Fujifilm X-S1 0

The Fujifilm X-S1, which Pocket-lint had a brief fling with over in Vegas at CES, has hit UK shops, priced up at ?699.

The Fujifilm X-S1 is a bridge camera that features a Fujinon 26x optical zoom lens and the same EXR sensor technology as the brand’s X10 compact.

The fixed lens offers a range of 24-624mm (35mm equivalent), and a maximum aperture of f/2.8. Couple this with Fujifilm’s proprietary Intelligent Digital Zoom and you’re apparently looking at a doubled focal range without a drop in picture quality. That means that it is possible to zoom up to a boasted 1,248mm.

The sensor is of a 12-megapixel EXR CMOS variety, while the?EXR processor and the X-S1 is also capable of? Full HD video capture, at 30fps and stereo sound recording as well. Around the back, the camera sports a 3-inch LCD screen, with 460k dot resolution, and there’s also a 0.47-inch electronic viewfinder with 1.44 million pixels.

When we took it for a spin over in Nevada we were impressed. The manual zoom lens is very cool, the viewfinder helps take superzooming to new levels and we have no doubt that image quality will be sublime. At almost ?700 it is more expensive than a Nikon D5100 kit though.

The Fujifilm X-S1 is available now – stay tuned to Pocket-lint for a full review soon.

<P><P><P>A few weeks back, a rumor hit the Internet that <a href="http://www.mtv.com/music/artist/bieber_justin/artist.jhtml">Justin Bieber</a> wanted to remake "Fear," his pal <a href="http://www.mtv.com/movies/person/166010/personmain.jhtml">Mark Wahlberg</a>'s classic thriller. Being that <a href="/news/articles/1665220/justin-bieber-mark-wahlberg-movie.jhtml">Wahlberg and Bieber</a> already have a project in the works, it wouldn't be too off base for the teen star to try his hand at the creepy film that follows a young man (Walhberg) who becomes obsessed with his teen girlfriend (<a href="http://www.mtv.com/movies/person/67798/personmain.jhtml">Reese Witherspoon</a>) and goes on a dangerous rampage when the romance turns sour. </p><div class="player-placeholder right" id="vid:729024" width="240" height="211"></div><p> Witherspoon will sit down with MTV News on Tuesday (January 31) for an exclusive interview and premiere of a previously unseen clip from her upcoming film, "This Means War." The special, "MTV First: This Means War," will air at 7:56 p.m. ET on MTV and MTV.com. And, during that chat, she has an interesting reaction to the news that her film may get a new-millennium remake. "Oh, really? Fine, great. That'd be cool. Would he be playing me, or is he playing Mark Wahlberg?" she wondered. "Is it like a girl who harasses the family, like a stalker who can't leave him alone? That would be good, right? I mean girls get crazy about him. Yeah, he's very talented." Much like <link type="content" id="1676492">Wahlberg, Witherspoon thinks Bieber certainly does have that "it" factor. "You know, I didn't know much about him until I saw the documentary. And I thought that was really worthwhile, worth seeing and it made me think, 'What a sweetheart,' and he has a really nice connection to his family," she said. "He's been working really hard, singing on the street." Following the on-air "First" segment, Academy Award winner Witherspoon will stay for an additional 30-minute interview on MTV.com with MTV News' Josh Horowitz. Fans can be part of the action right away by submitting questions on MTV.com or via Twitter by using the @MTVNews hashtag #MTVFirst. "This Means War," the McG-directed comedy-action film, stars Witherspoon as a seductive female dating two of the world's deadliest CIA operatives (played by Chris Pine and Tom Hardy), whose partnership and friendship are put in jeopardy when they begin to battle for her affection. Instead of talking to her about the love triangle, they try to settle the matter using all of the weapons at their disposal. The film also stars one of Witherspoon's real-life pals, comedian and "Chelsea Lately" host Chelsea Handler, who gives Reese's character the terrible advice that she should continue dating both men. <i>Can Justin Bieber tackle a "Fear" remake?
