Boy genius or hype?
You may have heard some of the hype surrounding today’s App of the Day, Summly. For its creator, 16-year old, Brit Nick D’Aloisio has been hailed everything from the new Mark Zuckerberg to the second coming of Jesus Christ himself.
Okay, so the comparisons perhaps haven’t stretched that far but he is getting rather bigged up online and his app is being developed by Horizons Ventures after it caught the eye of Li Ka-shing, the world’s 11th richest person.
He was even flown out to New York for some high profile business meetings. At least we think they were high profile – they were reported in The Metro after all.
Summly
- Format
- iPhone, iPod touch
- Price
- Free

- iTunes
The basic premise of Summly is a simple one. And within its simplicity lies its brilliance. Summly is a “simpler way to browse and search the web by automatically summarising search results, webpages and news articles” making it easy to find what you’re after, quickly, and with all the useless gubbins cut out.
It works as a standalone app, or as an extension to your iPhone’s Safari browser after following a few simple steps to get it up and running. The idea is, you find a webpage you want (or rather, it helps you find the page you want) and then, rather than you wasting your precious time reading it all, it summarises the key points using a “patent pending summarisation technology” that researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) have apparently tested.
Summly is easy to use, features a nice-enough UI and the idea is a brilliant one. Sadly, more often than not the results are either unavailable – despite the character count on the page being above 500 – or the key points get jumbled up. The summarising is very inconsistent.
Take these two examples. The first, a Pocket-lint story about the new Sky 1 series Gadget Geeks is summed up nicely. For the second, a Guardian story, it seems to think that the contact details of the MediaGuardian newsdesk are more important that the main points of the story.

So why include Summly as an App of the Day we hear you cry? Simple really, it’s one to keep an eye on and it’s a good idea to get in early to familiarise yourself with the setup in case it does blow up to be the internet sensation that many tech blogs are saying it will be.
And it is, at its core at least, a fantastically useful idea and the a fair crack at cutting the web wheat from that web chaff. It’s just got a “work in progress” feel to it at the moment.

In Japan, natch
Japanese vending machines are the stuff of legend. Pocket-lint has bought all manner of things from street vending machines in Tokyo in our travels – noodles, plastic characters from the world of manga, cans of the deliciously named Pocari Sweat, a freshly pressed shirt (but not schoolgirl’s used underwear, which is an urban myth) – so we’re fully aware of their importance to the nation’s culture, if somewhat?kitsch.
However now, thanks to Asahi Soft Drinks, the man-sized cans will host an altogether more practical delight; free Wi-Fi.
The drinks company is to build into each of its vending machines a Wi-Fi router which will offer connection to Japanese network Freemobile. Those in the immediate vicinity can then hook up for free high-speed Internet access on their mobile devices or laptops for up to 30 minutes in one sitting. The router will also store localised content, such as shopping mall maps, regional information, tourist details, that sort of thing. Oh, and they will sell soft drinks, of course.
Asahi plans to roll out 1,000 of the machines imminently, with another 10,000 planned for the next five years. It’ll take a while to replace its existing 250,000 vending machines nationwide, but if the scheme takes off, who knows?
We’d certainly love to see something similar hit the UK, but we’d have to have a national free Internet service first…

Her life has been filled with dramatic ups and downs, and Jennifer Hudson recently got real about how her fiance David Otunga saved her life.
The ?American Idol? alum explained, “I remember it like yesterday. And I was literally pickin’ up my bags to walk out the door to go to my mother’s house. And he called me, like, ‘Can you come out here instead of going, you know?’ And I was like, ‘Okay, sure.’ And that one decision, that one thing, I wouldn’t be sittin’ here.”
As it turns out, Jennifer was on her way to her mom?s house just before her mother, brother, and nephew were murdered, and without that phone call, she likely would have been killed as well.
Since than, Hudson has dropped a bunch of weight, taken her career to the next level, and written a book about the power of a positive attitude called ?I Got This,? set to release January 10th.
“That’s just how I look at things. Instead of second-guessing myself or doubting things, or even defeating myself before I even try. That’s where this came from. You know what — I Got This. That’s why I wrote this book. It’s like I wanna be that voice cheering others on you know. And if I got this, you got it too.”

Claim in lawsuit
Kindle case manufacturer M-Edge has filed a lawsuit against Amazon.com, claiming that the online retail giant threatened to unlawfully “de-list” its products and attempted to change the terms on a three-year contract signed in 2009 through a campaign of “coporate bullying”.
M-Edge Accessories, which sells cases for all forms of Kindle, other e-book readers, iPads and the Samsung Galaxy Tab range, filed the suit last Thursday in?a Maryland federal court in the US. It states that Amazon demanded an increased commission – to 25 per cent – on its cases sold through the Kindle Store, even though the existing contract equated to 15 per cent. It also claims that Amazon wanted a large lump sum paid retrospectively for cases sold from January 2010:
“In February of 2010, Amazon’s [Jay] Marine called M-Edge and stated that despite the existing contract terms, M-Edge had to retroactively pay the difference between the 8 per cent fee and the 25 per cent fee for all of January, 2010,” states the lawsuit. “That amount was approximately $600,000; a sizable sum to M-Edge. M-Edge refused, pointing to its existing, three-year contract which it had just signed in November of 2009. Marine replied that Amazon was “disappointed”, and stated that there would be “ramifications” resulting from M-Edge’s refusal.”
Those “ramifications”, according to M-Edge, included continuous?harassment?by Amazon executives Marine and Sara Otepka, with the latter allegedly threatening that “Amazon would ‘play’ with M-Edge’s Amazon.com product pages in such a way that ‘no one will be able to find you’.”
When asked about the case by the Wall Street Journal, Amazon declined to respond, stating that, “the company doesn’t comment on pending litigation.”

PETA’s youth division, peta2, is giving props to celebs like Justin Bieber, Ke$ha and “Glee” star Lea Michele at this year’s Libby Awards for their efforts in support of animal rights. The Biebs, who appeared in a campaign for the organization at the top of the year using Bieber-fied catch-phrases like “My world includes passion for animals, yours should too” and “Animals can make u smile. Adopt from your local shelter,” is taking on fellow animal-loving pop star Ke$ha and rappers k-os and Waka Flocka Flame in the Most Animal-Friendly Pop/Hip-Hop Artist category. Ke$ha appeared in an ad campaigning against the slaughter of Canadian seals. Michele, who speaks out against the mistreatment of carriage horses in New York City, faces off against “Jackass” star Steve-O, Cobra Starship’s leading man and peta2′s Sexiest Vegetarian Gabe Saporta, and “Victorious” star Daniella Monet in the Top Animal-Friendly Celebrity category. The Ready Set, Tokio Hotel, Hellogoodbye and the Swellers are all up for Most Animal-Friendly Band. Ke$ha and Tokio are also up for Best peta2 ad along with Social Distortion frontman Mike Ness and Yelle. The Libby (as in “Liberation”) Awards will be decided on January 17 by fan votes as well as peta2. Voting ends December 23. “Our nominees have all worked hard to shine their spotlights on a variety of important animal issues,” peta2 Division Manager Marta Holmberg said about the nominees, which honors animal-friendly people and products. “As our accomplished stars demonstrate, compassion isn’t just a virtue — it’s also a road to success.”

Sounds for Androids
The Klipsch Image S4a are specifically designed for Android devices, which makes them something of a rare breed. “Made for iPhone” has been around for a number of years, but “Made for Android” hasn’t. It’s only really in 2011 that we’ve seen the move to accommodate Androider’s needs through the likes of the Philips Fidelio AS851.
The Klipsch Image line does also cover those Apple products, as well as generic PC uses, coming from a line of headphones that are no stranger to quality, so we have high expectations. But will these meet the demands of the discerning Android user?
Design
The Klipsch Image S4a are designed with a bend in the body. This means the in-ear element is slightly angled from the body of the headphones. Although we’ve seen more substantial cable connections on headphones, the s4As feel solid enough. The bodies are light but feel like they will withstand a certain amount of abuse.

The earphones can be worn in two ways, either conventionally by plugging straight into the ear, or with the cable looped over the top of your ears. The latter route fits the angled design of the monitors, so they fit into the recess of your outer ear, rather than projecting forwards.
Looping the cables over your ears also means increased stability and this is suggested as “sport fit”. There is a slider on the cable that can be used to reduce cable movement and keep everything in place. However this may not be the most practical, as the in-line mic and controller is then held tight against your neck and isn’t as easy to get to.
You get a range of different tips in the box, special oval tips designed to increase comfort over long periods, which should help you get the perfect fit for your lugholes.
Don’t worry, be Appy
There is a control button on the Klipsch Image S4a, which uses a series of presses for different actions. This isn’t all natively supported by Android, however, so to unlock the full potential of these headphones you’ll have to download an app. Inside the packaging you’ll find a QR code.
Strangely this QR code doesn’t take you to the app it’s asking you to download, but to the Klipsch website, so it’s not really worth the effort. However, searching for Klipsch on the Android Market works fine.
This app then enables the button controls, and lets you customise various features. You can have a default music app that launches when you connect your headphones, you can set what a double press does and so on, as well as defining the speed of a double press. This is well worth doing, as initially the double press wasn’t detected for us – lightening fast, you see. Conveniently there is a “custom” setting that will detect the speed and set the app accordingly.

After that, things work as they should. You simply use the headphones and everything works. Should you decide not to use the app, you’ll find that you probably only get play/pause functions, but essentially, the headphones work perfectly well with other devices. Should you also happen to have an Apple device, you’ll find the single button works as it should, but obviously there are no volume controls.
Despite the lack of proper volume controls, volume can be changed on your Android device with a long press of the button. This cycles through different volumes, so whilst it isn’t as direct as simply pressing a button to step up or down a notch, the end result is more or less the same in an round-about sort of way. The Klipsch app also lets you define maximum and minimum volumes, as well as the starting volume, so you’ll never find yourself deafened.
Sweet beats
If you’ve never used oval tips before you might find them a little unusual, but we didn’t have a problem fitting or wearing them. They were comfortable, although at times we had to give them a wiggle as they felt they were a little too deep into our ears. They did an excellent job of isolating external noise however, which is the more important point.
That sets up the Klipsch S4a to a great start, leading onto great all round performance. Klipsch have something of a reputation for great headphones and that’s true of the S4a too. Bass is handled with skill, making these a good choice if you enjoy a lively low range. But this isn’t to the detriment of mid and high range. It’s a sound profile that we like very much. They perhaps aren’t the most accomplished of in-ear headphones when it comes to clarity, but they leave us little to complain about.
The volumes they will produce is certainly louder than we’d ever want to listen to, so we’re grateful the app can be used to set a limit. They’re also more affordable than some at ?89, which sounds like a sweet deal.
Verdict:
Good performance and an app that really helps, the Klipsch Image S4a are a set of headphones that will do your Android device proud, whilst not sacrificing compatibility with other devices.
That said, we did note that they didn’t work properly on the Samsung Galaxy S – something we’ve experienced before and something worth checking before you part with your cash.
The lack of a proper volume control is also a bit of an irritation in reality. Although the single button press gets you where you want to be, having used the S4a for about a month, we’re left wishing for a regular volume rocker.
Definitely worthy of consideration if your music device of choice is Android-powered.

Not helpful to its launch schedule
Microsoft is taking a leaf out of Apple’s book in that it will no longer be attending or making a keynote at the consumer electronics show (CES) in Las Vegas.
The show, that launches at the beginning of January, is a way for companies to show off all their latest product launches for the year to come, however it turns out that Microsoft will not be attending in anything like the same way it has in the past, which as well as the keynote means no MS booths either.
Frank Shaw, vice president corporate comms, stated that: “We’ll continue to participate in CES as a great place to connect with partners and customers across the PC, phone and entertainment industries, but we won’t have a keynote or booth after this year because our product news milestones generally don’t align with the show’s January timing.”
As for this year’s CES, it’s doubtful we’ll see any big announcements although with what has, on the whole, been a very good year for Microsoft we’re sure it’ll be going over some of its past glories in the phone and gaming areas, along with a few hints at what’s to come.
After being at the show for nearly 20 years it seems like a bold decision to stop now, just when it looks as though Microsoft are riding a bit of a wave. However, it actually shows how confident the company are feeling about the future; focusing on its own events, like MIX and BUILD, could begin to add a little kudos to a company that has struggled with its image in the past.

The holidays aren?t just a time for gift-giving ? they?re also a time to escape your family and take in a flick. So, if you want to see a movie this weekend, you?re in luck. You?ve got plenty to choose from.
Of the new releases, ?The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo? holds a slim lead over ?Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol.? Interest in the David Fincher-directed version of ?Tattoo? is solid across the board. Lookups recently surged 90% in one hour and there are also a slew of lookups for ?who is the girl in the dragon tattoo.? For those wondering, the title character is played by Rooney Mara. She may be best known for her work in ?The Social Network.?
?The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo? is only slightly more popular with men than women in search. The film, which is R-rated and contains some severe images of abuse and violence, is drawing the majority of its searches from those 21 and older. Also buzzing ? the film?s soundtrack, and, in particular, Karen O?s version of the Led Zepplin classic ?Immigrant Song? that is featured in the film?s trailer.
Of the stars, Rooney Mara is hugely popular. Interest in the actress has more than doubled of late, and she is more than four times as popular as co-star Daniel Craig. Sorry, 007.
“Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol” may have an unwieldy name, but the film is a bona fide hit in Search. The film is among Yahoo?s top 1,500 overall search terms and related lookups on ?mission impossible trailer,? ?mission impossible 4,? and the rather humorous ?what is ghost protocol? are all on the rise.
And while Tom Cruise is the star of the show, its his female costars who are stealing the spotlight. Paula Patton, who may be best known for her work in ?Hitch? and ?Déjà vu,? is among Yahoo?s top 1,750 overall searches. That?s no small feat, and a sign that this could be a breakout movie for the stunning actress.
Likewise, interest in Lea Seydoux is also getting hot. The French stunner has had roles in ?Midnight in Paris? and ?Robin Hood,? but its her role as sultry villain in ?Ghost Protocol? that has fans excited. Searches on the actress are up 15% over the past 24 hours.
?The Adventures of Tintin? is in third place in Search, but that could change. The film, directed by the great Steven Spielberg, is based on the hugely popular comic of the same name. Though the film doesn?t boast any A-list stars, it is never wise to count out Spielberg at the box office. Searches on the film are among Yahoo?s top 4,000 terms and is skewing male with about two-thirds of the lookups coming from men. Kids 17 and under make up a full 30% of the lookups.
Finally, there?s ?We Bought a Zoo.? The Matt Damon dramedy also features Scarlett Johansson and Thomas Haden Church. The film is in Yahoo?s top 4,500 overall search terms and recently jumped 37% in search. Should the film earn solid reviews and good word of mouth, expect those numbers to jump even higher.
