Coming to US in 2012
1 million Samsung Galaxy Notes shipped worldwide

Samsung has announced that it has recently shipped its one millionth Galaxy Note, and that it will be bringing the smartphone/tablet combination device to the US in 2012.

The company claims that sales of the Note have been promising, with a healthy rise in the territories in which it’s currently available;?Europe and Asia including France, Germany, Hongkong and Taiwan. And this acheivement, says Samsung in a statement, is made more remarkable as it has created a brand new market for “something between smartphone and tablet pc” (conveniently forgetting the Dell Streak).

An official from the company also promises that the Galaxy Note is merely the first step on a roadmap that includes other unique devices: “1 million global shipping of Galaxy Note means it has well positioned itself as a market creator. Samsung will continuously strengthen its leadership in the global smartphone market as well as create new markets with innovative devices.”

In Pocket-lint’s review of the Samsung Galaxy Note, we said that it?”offers undoubted quality throughout, from its dual-core processor to superb display.” And added that it is as?”useful as a larger device, yet more?portable. We can certainly see office workers up and down the country loving a bit of Galaxy Note action. For them, this is a godsend.”

It seems that many many of you agree.

According to rumours, that is
iPhone 5 coming late 2012, clad in rubber

Christmas may be a very recent memory, and your belches may still be turkey and mince pie flavoured, but sources have no respect for the holidays. They must blab their highly confidential tidbits of information to eagerly attentive journalists regardless of the time of year. Rumours won’t start themselves you know.

This time, it is a “close source” of Boy Genius Report who has poo-poohed the idea of sitting in front of the TV to watch The Wizard of Oz in preference to spilling their guts about the possible release date and design of the iPhone 5.

According to the site (and “confidently”, to boot), the next handset from Apple will be released in the Fall of 2012, the same time as the iPhone 4S was launched in 2011 (14 October, for the calendar compulsives among you).?Additionally, it will incorporate some form of rubber or plastic in its all-new design.

The material used will be similar to that of the bumper cases sold (and eventually given away) by Apple that protected the iPhone 4, and helped negate the effects of antennagate: “In all likelihood, this material will be used as a bezel surrounding the front edge of the phone,” says BGR, although doesn’t really explain why.

It also believes that the rubber or plastic will attach the glass screen to an aluminium back plate, much like that used on the iPad 2 – which, kind-of, complies with previous rumours.

Whether any of this is true or not remains to be seen. What we can guarantee is that, from now until the actual launch event in many months time, this will not be the last we hear about the iPhone 5. Oh no. No siree.

Europe rollout in January
LG Prada 3.0

The LG Prada phone launch has begun in South Korea, with the phone gradually making its way into the hands of European fashionistas by January.?

The new handset, which we had a play with recently, is actually the third Prada and LG combo phone to be released to market. The Prada connection means design is paramount with the phone, don’t go expecting no cutting edge hardware here, looks is what the Prada 3.0 is all about.?

Forget the usual special gold bezel or crappy Swarovski crystals, there isn’t even any dinosaur bone to be seen, instead the handset is all about understated design and style. A customised Android 2.3 UI designed by Prada themselves, features simple black and white icons. Widgets are also not the usual HTC affair, swapping full screen weather apps that tell you the temperature in fifty countries, to just clean and small colourless widgets.?

Although not being quite up there with the Android top dogs, the Prada phone is actually quite surprising in the power department, with 1GHz of dual-core goodness and 1GB of RAM to play with. Expandable microSD storage and an 8 megapixel camera completes the hardware package quite nicely. NFC also raises its near field communicating head, making our comment about hardware not being important earlier rather obsolete. The final specs flourish worth mentioning is the 4.3 inch 800 x 480 display, which definitely does justice to the custom looks of Prada’s own UI.?

What really matters is the pricing of the handset. Given it performs in both the design and specs department, we can see this one being quite a big seller. Shame then that we still haven’t got a final cost of the phone, although we expect it to be priced at around ?499. It is selling for about $780 in Korea if that is anything to go by.

The Prada 3.0 could end up being rather a good little phone. Definitely one of the cheaper ways of getting your hands on the Prada label and better still, you get a top notch handset to go with it. Much more exciting than a trendy suit or pair of shoes.?

Samsung: Galaxy S won't get Ice Cream Sandwich. Phones, Mobile phones, Samsung, Samsung Galaxy S, Ice Cream Sandwich, Android 0

Got a Samsung Galaxy S? We’ve got bad news. According to Samsung your phone won’t be getting Google’s new Android operating system Ice Cream Sandwich.

Why? Well according to Samsung the phone just isn’t powerful enough to run both Android 4.0 and its own TouchWiz skin together at the same time.

The company announced the bad news on its Samsung Tomorrow website in Korean. Using the help of Google Translate (which is pretty awful it has to be said) Samsung details how the Samsung Galaxy S and the first iteration of the Samsung Galaxy Tab aren’t powerful enough to cope with the new Google OS.

“The company’s argument is that they lack sufficient RAM and ROM to run the new OS alongside TouchWiz and other ‘experience-enhancing’ software,” reports The Verge, a US gadget site, after being tipped off about the news by one of its readers.

Samsung?has confirmed some of the company’s smartphones will be getting the upgrade to Android 4.0 in the new year. Those include the Award winning Samsung Galaxy S II launched in February a year after the Samsung Galaxy S.

Thankfully Samsung Galaxy S customers in the UK that signed up for a two year contract at the start of the phones introduction should be ready for an upgrade just before the summer, meaning you won’t have long to change to the new OS anyway.?

Two months ago, a story about Bobby Montoya, a 7-year-old boy from Denver, hit the Web. Bobby, who prefers playing with girl-oriented toys and, according to his mother, Felisha Archuleta, “identfies as a girl,” wanted to join his local Girl Scout Troop.

Initially, this was met with resistance by a representative from the Girl Scouts, who said that Bobby couldn’t join. The Girl Scouts of Colorado later released a statement saying that Bobby could join if he wanted.

Rachelle Trujillo, vice president of communications at Girl Scouts of Colorado, told The Upshot: “Girl Scouts is an inclusive organization, and we accept all girls in kindergarten through 12th grade as members. If a child lives life as a girl and the family brings the child to us to participate in Girl Scouts, Girl Scouts of Colorado welcomes her.”

But now, a few months later, some troop leaders are rebelling. Susan Bryant-Snure, a Troop Leader in Louisiana, has resigned from the organization out of protest. She is one of three leaders to resign.

According to The Christian Post, the three leaders were all associated with the Northlake Christian School in Covington, Louisiana. The Christian Post spoke with Rachelle Trujillo, who said Bobby’s admission to the Girl Scouts was up to the local Girl Scout Council, not the national organization Girl Scouts of the USA.

Whether these resignations have any effect on Bobby’s circumstances remains to be seen.

‘Party in the U.S.A.’ star was blinded by flashes after meeting with producer Dr. Luke, sources tell MTV News.

Photo: Kevin Mazur/WireImage

When photos of Miley Cyrus outside of Hollywood’s Chateau Marmont hit the Internet on Tuesday (March 15), gossip blogs claimed the star was stumbling around the L.A.-area hotspot after a night of partying. But sources close to Cyrus tell MTV News the rumors are all wrong. Miley was in a meeting with producer Dr. Luke at the hotel, where they discussed writing music for other artists. Luke and Cyrus worked together on her hit “Party in the U.S.A.” According to sources, the teen superstar was actually blinded by the flashing lights of the paparazzi, not stumbling, as had been reported earlier on Tuesday. Last week, Cyrus made headlines defending her mom against paparazzi gathered outside of the California Chicken Cafe in West Hollywood, California. She confronted one of the photographers, telling him, “You just hit my mom with your camera, don’t you ever do that again. You just almost hurt my mom. Don’t you ever even think about it, for real.” Cyrus has often expressed her displeasure with the celebrity photogs. “I just [want] people to know, I think in pictures I always look upset. It’s because these cameras are following me. I just think it’s really kind of unfair,” she shared in a September video blog. “I know there are some people that maybe like that attention, but I’m not one of them. I really just want to be able to go on walks and enjoy where I live. … The paparazzi really frustrate me, and it makes me really upset that I’m being followed around by men that I don’t know, and for anyone else, it would be considered stalking. I don’t know who those guys are. I don’t know if they’re good guys or bad guys. I don’t necessarily care; I don’t want anyone following me.” In spite of the unwanted media attention, Cyrus is already having a good 2011. She recently showed off her funny side as a host on “Saturday Night Live” and she has two flicks, “LOL” and “So Undercover,” set for release this year.

Say analysts
Apple planning custom channels on iTV

Apple iTV is set to revolutionise broadcast television if the Cupertino giant has its way, according to analysts Shaw Wu and?Sterne Agee. They firmly believe that the company will want to offer internet-based paid subscriptions and offer customised channel lineups, effectively going head-to-head with Virgin Media and Sky in the UK.

Essentially, the system will work like Talk Talk TV (nee Tiscali TV) – the service that is still active to existing subscribers, but no longer accepting new signups. All TV programming will be streamed via the Internet, effectively giving the viewer complete control over what channels they require as part of their subscription.

Obviously, this would require a decent broadband connection and licensing deals with all of the stations that are available, but if enacted would become a unique proposition (being built into a TV set from the get go) and would give Apple a jump over other set manufacturers:

“This is obviously much more complicated (than current offerings) from a licensing standpoint,” said Wu in a statement to investors. “And in our view, would change the game for television and give AAPL a big leg-up against the competition.

“Today, iTunes has a rich library of movies and TV shows but it is mostly for downloads and only movies are available for rentals (TV shows once were but were terminated in August 2011),” he added. “What’s missing is live broadcast television.”

In the US, it has already been revealed that Apple approached CBS for a?potential streaming TV deal, but the network declined, favouring to license its own content. The UK may be an even harder nut to crack, considering governmental involvement in broadcasting in general and the BBC specifically.

It also remains to be seen what Apple will call its offering in the UK, with broadcaster ITV willing to go to battle over its name and brand identity. It is unlikely that the tech company will localise names, as it’s not in its nature to so, so we’d expect the final moniker to be different globally (iTelly, anyone?).

If it is to sort out licensing deals and the name, Apple will have to get a wriggle on if it’s to meet the rumoured Christmas 2012 release date.

APP OF THE DAY: Lumi for iPhone review. iPhone apps, Apps, Gaming, Lumi, App of the day 0

We’ve had a great run of AOTD’s this year and as we near the end of 2011, we thought we’d feature a cracking game, which is not only very pretty, but plays particularly nicely on the iPhone.

Potted from the older Xbox 360 title this game should while away a few peaceful hours whilst you prepare for the new year and also bring some light relief from any number of action titles you’ve been given/playing during the Christmas period.

Lumi for iPhone

Format
iPhone
Price
?0.69
Where
iTunes

Lumi for iPhone, on the face of it, is just another puzzle platformer mixing a little bit of grey matter usage with some basic use of the iPhone’s touchscreen to propel your mouse-like creature around a world that stretches over ten levels.

However, there are numerous touches that set this apart from the overcrowded genre and make it worth the 69p download price: it is one of the prettiest games on the platform, nice colours and solid visuals bringing a feast for the eyes especially with the Retina Display; and its gameplay is simple and intuitive.

Controls are, for the most part, a breeze as you fling Lumi from magnetic vortex to magnetic vortex in order to collect the fireflies that will bring light and enlightenment back to a world shrouded in darkness. Despite this simplicity, however, you’ll need to practice in order to get Lumi moving just right as some of the fireflies can be tricky to reach.

There is also enough on show to keep the interest going as new challenges are introduced across the levels including little bug meanies and ever complex puzzling.

We have to say we are impressed with what’s on show here, it won’t be for everyone as it’s a nice game to relax to and won’t get the blood pumping like some other titles; but if you like pretty games with easy controls and addictive gameplay then you need look no further.

Hot on the heels of the trailer for “The Dark Knight Rises” comes the first look at “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.” The hotly anticipated prequel (the first of two) to the “Lord of the Rings” trilogy hits theaters December 14, 2012.

As expected, the trailer spurred massive interest on the Web. Online searches for “hobbit trailer,” “watch hobbit trailer,” and “hobbit trailer 2012″ all roared into breakout status. Commenters around the Web who chimed in with their thoughts on the Peter Jackson-directed film are, for the most part, quite positive.

See the hottest movie trailers and clips.

Over at Entertainment Weekly, many fans admitted that they actually got a little teary-eyed during the trailer. One commenter wrote, “Is it wrong that it got me a little misty?” Another quickly replied, “Not at all. When the dwarves sang, it got me misty too. Jackson always did hit the nail on the head with regard to Tolkien’s songs.”

Over at IGN, the commenters are also almost uniformly positive. One fan writes, “Now THAT’S how you do a Trailer!” Another writes, “SHUT UP AND TAKE MY MONEY.” And another clear fan writes, “The Hobbit is going to so amazing, but the wait is going to be painful too.”

From what we see in the clip, the film does make a few notable changes from the novel. For one, Gandolf (played by Ian McKellan) appears to have a bit of a love interest, in the form of Cate Blanchett‘s Galadriel.

But what about what we don’t see? The International Business Times points out that the trailer keeps Smaug, the fearsome dragon of Misty Mountain, under wraps. Ditto Elijah Wood‘s Frodo, who is due to make an appearance. Maybe in the next trailer?

In a recent voicemail, Champ asked if the AT&T website made a mistake claiming the iPhone 4S is 4G. BT said yes, but it’s no mistake. AT&T includes HSPA+ in their definition of 4G. That said, how long are we going to keep counting the number of Gs in a phone? I’m over it.

Mr. Stephen Beacham,

We are the 10 percent. We are getting forced to “convert” in elementary school. We have to choose between products that work well, but cost more, or products that work for everyone but us. We are denied quality cooking utensils. Our iPhones refuse to get service. We are seen as sinister. We have been ignored by the 90%.

On Thursday, December 8, 2011, we took the first step towards recognition. We occupied Twitter. By reversing the position of your tweet stream and sidebar, the 90% are forced to endure what the 10% must go through on a daily basis. So Mr. Beacham, when you call the new twitter “backwards” you are giving us just what we want. Who are we? We are the left handers of the world, and whether you like it or not, we are here to stay. We are the 10%.

~Joseph (southpaw spokesman)

P.S. If indeed you are left handed, those righties have gotten into your head. You’re not sitting at our table at lunch.

John and Emily seem to be soaking up the sun before relocating to snowy Sundance for the ski town’s annual film festival. Only get email when at work
Volkswagen turns off BlackBerry email after work so staff get peace away from office. Phones, BlackBerry, Volkswagen, RIM, Mobile phones, 0

Will you be checking your emails over Christmas? Volkswagen, the German car maker has come up with a novel idea to ensure some of its German employees get a much needed break, by not delivering their email to their BlackBerry smartphones when they aren’t on duty.

Volkswagen has confirmed on Friday that some of its workers in German don’t receive emails on their?BlackBerry?when they aren’t working?after complaints that life work lines became too blurred.

A spokesman for VW told the BBC: “We confirm that this agreement between VW and the company’s work council exists”, but would not comment further.

Under the arrangement the company has programmed its BlackBerry servers to stop routing emails 30 minutes after the end of employees’ shifts, and then start again 30 minutes before they return to work.

The staff can still use their devices to make calls and the rule does not apply to senior management, but it means that those on the scheme get work free nights free from email intrusion.?

“The issue of employees using Blackberrys, computers and other devices out of working time is a growing one that needs to be addressed as it can be a source of stress,” Trades Union Congress (TUC) secretary general Brendan Barber told the BBC.

Many BlackBerry users refer to the smartphone as crackberries as it sucks you into being able to get your emails all day every day even at the weekend.

That of course is the same with all smartphones now too, however individual to the RIM handset is the ability to stop and start the main mail server when required.

Nokia a couple of years ago introduced a system that allowed users to set up a work mode and weekend mode, however it failed to gain any traction, with many failing to switch between the two.?

BlackBerry users can of course have their phone automatically stop receiving emails at a set time, however many say that is a personal choice and one that their company many not agree to.?
